College of Science, University of Kirkuk discussed a Ph.D. thesis on the immunological and molecular interaction between COVID-19 and bacterial infections in diabetic patients by the postgraduate student, Mr. Osama Imad Ibrahim.

The thesis aimed at analyzing the immunological and molecular relation between the SARS-CoV-2 virus and bacterial infections in type 2 diabetes patients using PCR, ELISA and Comet Assay techniques, along with analyzing the virus's gene sequences and mutations.

The thesis concluded that there is a cumulative effect of age and diabetes on the severity of infection and a correlation between high HbA1c and weakened immunity, it also discovered mutations in Omicron strains registered in the NCBI Global Genebank, as well as detecting multiresistant bacteria and significant genetic damage.
