Research and Development Department, Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research held a workshop on the national project of planting one million trees throughout Iraq, Ministry’s Deputy for Scientific Research Affairs, Dr. Fouad Qassim Mohammed said. Dr. Mohammed reviewed the project of planting a million trees has introduced a culture of afforestation scientifically to universities to be socialized to combat desertification, improve the environment and expand green areas in cooperation with all State’s departments and holy shrines. Dr. Mohammed also reviewed that the project is among the promising projects that will reflect positively on the life of Iraqi community. For her part, manager of the project of planting one million trees, Dr. Afaq Ibrahim said that the project started since 2016 and reached its peak in the current year 2019. Dr. Ibrahim reviewed that the project aimed at creating a society aware of the importance of the tree through spreading the culture of afforestation, combating desertification, maintaining water and food security as well as its importance in the manufacturing industries by benefiting from the project products from the planted trees. Dr. Ibrahim praised the role of the contributed Iraqi universities to the success of the project which reached 18 universities and 6 secondary schools associated with the Ministry of Education and the supporters such as Ministry of Oil, Baghdad Municipality, Imam Ali Holy Shrine, Imam Al-Abbas Holy Shrines and a number of universities in the Kurdistan region.
