College of Science, University of Basrah discussed a Ph.D. thesis on an ecological study of aquatic plants and water quality in the Shatt al-Arab stream by applying geographic information systems (GIS) by the postgraduate student, Mrs. Naglaa Hashim. The thesis aimed at measuring the physical and chemical properties of water and sediments in the Shatt al-Arab and a survey of aquatic plants along the course. The thesis concluded that aquatic plants are among the most important regulators of the aquatic environment and contribute to the restoration of degraded aquatic environments, which supports the return of biodiversity. The thesis recommended the establishment of sewage treatment plants before it is released, raising awareness and activating environmental laws.
